A ride-share trip in Kitchener ended abruptly over the weekend after police say a driver was caught travelling nearly twice the posted speed limit in a residential area.
Waterloo Regional Police said officers were in the Shirley Avenue area on Saturday when they observed a vehicle moving at 98 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The driver was stopped at the scene.
Vehicle towed after stunt driving charge
Police said the driver was charged with stunt driving, an offence that carries immediate roadside consequences in Ontario. The vehicle was also impounded and removed by tow truck.
The enforcement action also left the driver and passenger needing to arrange another ride after the stop.
Speed enforcement remains a safety focus
The case adds to ongoing concerns around excessive speeding on local roads, particularly in lower-speed urban areas where traffic, pedestrians and nearby homes can increase the risk of serious collisions.
No additional details about the driver or passenger were released. Police have not said whether any injuries or collisions were reported in connection with the incident.
